961 Martyn Waghorn

Biography

Nuggety Mackem striker joined City in August 2011 on a three month loan.  After a promising start and a solitary goal at Doncaster, his loan spell was cut short by a hamstring injury.

Born and raised in South Shields, Waghorn joined Sunderland’s youth system at a young age and made his first team debut for the Black Cats a month before his 18th birthday.  He was unable to establish himself as a first team regular at the Stadium of Light and after a successful loan spell at Leicester City in 2009/10, Waghorn joined the Foxes permanently that following summer for a £3m fee.  After a second season in the Leicester that was curtailed by injury, Waghorn joined Hull City to regain fitness and promptly suffered the same injury.

After two more seasons at Leicester Waghorn moved to Wigan Athletic for one season (after a successful loan) then headed north to sign for a resurgent Glasgow Rangers.  In two seasons at Ibrox Waghorn scored a goal every two games, form that in August 2017 convinced Ipswich Town to offer the chance to resume his Championship career.

Waghorn was capped at England under-19 while at Sunderland and England under-21 while at Leicester City.
