1026 Lazar Markovic

Biography

Markovic joined City in January 2017 on loan from Liverpool.  An attacking midfielder, Markovic had a series of loans to rebuild his confidence following a shaky start at Anfield, and his form varied in his five months at the KCOM Stadium.  At times he was irresistible, at times he was anonymous.  However his injury late in the season seemed to be a major contribution to the club’s drop in form and relegation during May 2017.

Hailing from the historic city of Cacak in Serbia, Lazar joined Partizan Belgrade as a teenager and made his first team bow shortly after his 17th birthday.  After two seasons around the Partizan first team, Markovic joined Portuguese side Benfica and enjoyed a successful season, helping the Lisbon side reach the Europa League semi-final.  Markovic’s form encouraged Liverpool to part with £20m for his services, but he struggled to establish himself in the Anfield first team and had loans to Fenerbache and Sporting CP with mixed results.

Markovic is an established Serbian international having debuted in the senior side just days before his 18th birthday.
