1012 Nick Powell

Biography

Attacking midfielder Powell signed for the Tigers on loan in January 2016, bringing a reputation for past glories and recent obscurity.  He was injured almost as soon as he arrived and failed to leave a strong impression on Steve Bruce’s side.  It is nevertheless rumoured that Bruce’s insistence on signing Powell, and the club hierarchy’s refusal to comply, was one of several factors that led to the club’s most successful manager resigning in July 2016, days before the notorious “nine first team players” training trip to Austria.

A youngster at Crewe Alexandra’s famous academy, Powell had over 50 first team appearances under his belt when he signed for Manchester United at the age of 18.  But the big move proved too much for the young Nick, and he failed to make any impression on the Old Trafford first team, leading to three loans to the Championship.

Powell’s Manchester United contract expired in Summer 2016 and he signed for Championship side Wigan Athletic – who nine months later were former Championship side Wigan, despite Powell netting an 11 minute hattrick in a 3-2 win against Barnsley.

Powell was capped for England at all youth levels from under-16 and under-21.
