Scottish attacking midfielder Maloney was signed in August 2016 to lend attacking flair to City’s Championship title shot. He played a useful support role during his first season and was used as impact substitute at the start of the subsequent Premier League season, scoring a vital goal in City’s second win of the season at Swansea. In June 2017 he turned down the offer of a one year contract extension to stay at the Tigers, preferring a move into coaching.
Born to Scottish parents, his father was a helicopter pilot working in Malaysia at the time of Maloney’s birth. He forged an impressive senior career from the age of 16 at Celtic, staying at Parkhead for seven successful seasons. In 2007 Maloney headed south to join Aston Villa, but returned to Celtic a year later. After three more seasons in Glasgow Maloney signed for Wigan Athletic, where he established himself as a player of genuine Premier League quality. In 2015 he headed to Chicago Fire to play in Major Soccer League, but returned to England only 8 months later when he signed for City.
After an offer of a playing contract at Aberdeen foundered due to injury concerns, Maloney joined the coaching team at Celtic in August 2017.
Maloney earned 20 under-21 caps for Scotland and made his senior international debut in October 2005 against Belarus.
