1003 Sam Clucas

Biography

Versatile midfielder, striker and left back Clucas joined City in August 2015, a £1m fee luring Chesterfield into the sale.  He gradually established his place in the first team in the opening weeks of 2015/16, playing on the left side of midfield for much of the season.  Elevated to the Premier League but shorn of a properly sized squad, City manager Mike Phelan deployed Clucas as a deep lying midfielder and he immediately excelled in this new role, linking up play in an ultra-reliable manner and attracting the attention of national football journalists and England selectors.

A Lincoln lad, Sam was a youngster in Leicester City’s academy system but was released at 16.  After a short spell at Lincoln City, Clucas spent a season at Glenn Hoddle’s Spanish player reclamation academy.  He signed for Hereford United in 2011, then moved on to Mansfield Town and Chesterfield to compile a unique record of having spent five consecutive seasons in the Conference National, League 2, League 1, Championship and Premier League.
