995 Harry Maguire

Biography

When Harry Maguire signed for City in July 2014 he had 150 first team appearances already under his belt.  But his first season at City saw him appear only sporadically in the first team and he spent the final months on loan at Wigan Athletic. He played more regularly in the first team during the his second season in the Championship, but it was only in 2016 and returning to the Premier League that Harry dislodged Michael Dawson and Curtis Davies from the first XI.  His trademarks were tough tackles, good positional sense and a pleasing tendency to maraud forwards with ball at feet.  A short lived but genuine City hero.

Born in Sheffield, Maguire spent his youth career at Sheffield United, making his first team debut just after his 18th birthday and quickly forging a regular first team place.  His form continued to improve during the Blades’ unlikely run to the FA Cup Semi Final in 2014, which encouraged Hull City to part with £2.5m for his services two months later.

Maguire came to national prominence thanks to his fine defensive form for Marco Silva’s resurgent Tigers.  When that surge ended in disappointing relegation it was inevitable that Maguire would be sold, and he signed for Leicester City in June 2017 for a fee in the environs of £15m.

Maguire claimed a solitary England under-21 cap in 2012.
