991 Shane Long

Biography

Irish striker Long was pursued by City for over a year before he signed in January 2014.  He contributed goals that kept the Tigers in the Premier League, although he was unable to play in City’s run to the FA Cup Final as he was cup-tied.  In July 2014 he played in City’s first dabble in Europe against Trencin, but in August he was sold to Southampton for a tidy profit.

Born in County Tipperary, Long signed for Cork City just before his 17th birthday.  A year later he was snapped up by Reading and over the course of five seasons he scored a goal every four games. In 2011 he signed for West Bromwich Albion where his strong form continued.

Long signed for Southampton in August 2014 for a £12m fee, where he played a valuable support role to the first XI.

Long made his senior debut for Ireland in February 2007 and has been a regular starter for several seasons since then.
