986 Steve Harper

Biography

Goalkeeper Harper joined City in July 2013 on a one year deal, which was subsequently extended by a further twelve months.  Harper bought his considerable Premier League experience to the newly promoted Tigers and was a useful backup keeper to Allan McGregor when injured or out of form.

Harper began his career at Seaham Red Star, just up the A19 from his Easington Colliery birthplace.  In 1993 he signed for Newcastle United and spent twenty years at the Magpies, generally playing a support role to several higher profile netminders.  His longevity in a bit-part role elevated him to cult status amongst Newcastle fans, and Harper was honoured in 2013 with a testimonial against AC Milan.  His time at Newcastle included some notable highs, including a start in the 1999 FA Cup Final and many appearances in the Champions League.

Following his City departure Harper spent six months at rivals Sunderland, where he didn’t make a first team appearance.  In 2016 he ended his playing career and is now an academy coach at Newcastle United as well as a regular pundit on the radio and local TV.
